Abstract

Echinacea tennesseensis (Beadle) Small (Compositae:Heliantheae: Ziniinae) is described and illustrated, and is accompa-nied by statements on its distribution, habitat, phenology, etymologyand vernacular names. A statement on its conservation status is made.AbriefhistoryofEchinaceais provided, with a commentary of the mostuseful revision discussed. The subtribal position and related generaofEchinaceais discussed, with the most recent account proposing thatEchinaceais placed in the subtribe Zinniinae, alongsideZinnia,SanvitaliaandHeliopsis, amongst others, and quite separate fromRudbeckiaandRatibida, with which it has often been allied, now placed in the subtribeRudbeckiinae
