Abstract
Heterotheca camporum (Greene) Shinners (Compositae:Astereae: Chrysopsidinae) is described and illustrated.Notes are provided for the species’ cultivation, propaga-tion, likely pests and diseases, and availability. A full syn-onymy is given, along with type citations and knownpresence of type material, together with relevant notes.Selected illustrations of the species are cited, and state-ments of the species’ distribution, habitat and ecology,phenology, etymology, conservation status and vernacularnames provided. The Wakehurst plants vary considerablyin capitulum size, but critical morphological characters areidentical, placing the material in Heterotheca camporumvar. camporum, one of the W ESTERN G OLDENASTERS . Thereare currently two concepts of the infrageneric division ofHeterotheca Cass. Semple’s, used in the Flora of NorthAmerica, would place our material in Heterotheca sect.Phyllotheca (Nutt.) Harms. In contrast, Nesom’s morerecent sectional concept restricts sect. Phyllotheca to thewestern seaboard of the United States; more specifically heconsidered the section essentially Californian. Nesomplaced our species, one of 49, in sect. ChrysantheG.L. Nesom; our species belongs in the Heterotheca villosagroup or complex. Heterotheca camporum is easily con-fused with Chrysopsis mariana (L.)
