Abstract
An overview of the genus is provided, covering the history of its discovery for science, the fossil record and its taxonomy and systematics. The disputed split of the genus is discussed. A summary description for the genus is presented, alongside a list of known hybrids. Interactions with other organisms are covered, including mycorrhizal fungi and mistletoes, and there is a brief overview of the conservation status of members of the genus. Cultivation and forestry usage of southern beeches in the United Kingdom, and their potential for naturalisation, are described and discussed.
