Abstract
During the preparation of Clusiaceae for the , several new species of L. were identified but left with lettered informal names. Here, we formally describe two of those. Hammel can be distinguished most assuredly from morphologically related species by its pistillate flowers with 24 – 26 (– 42) staminodes and the unusual large mass of yellow arillate tissue covering the seeds. Hammel is similar to but distinct by having relatively longer inflorescences (5 – 15 cm vs 4.5 cm), pistillate flowers with 16 staminodes, and seeds covered in an orange aril. These two new species are known from a limited number of localities and are endemic to mountain and lowland forests on the Pacific slopes in central and southern Costa Rica.
Durante la preparación del tratamiento taxonómico de Clusiaceae para el Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica, se identificaron varias especies nuevas de L. que se quedaron sin nombres formales, indicadas solo con letras. Aquí describimos formalmente dos de estas especies. Hammel se puede distinguir más certeramente de especies morfológicamente relacionadas por tener flores pistiladas con 24 – 26 (– 42) estaminodios y semillas cubiertas en una masa de tejido arilado amarillo inusualmente grande. Hammel es parecida a pero se distingue por tener inflorescencias relativamente más largas (5 – 15 cm vs 4.5 cm), flores pistiladas con 16 estaminodios y semillas cubiertas de arilo color naranja. Estas dos nuevas especies se conocen de un número limitado de localidades y son endémicas de bosques de montaña y de tierras bajas en la vertiente Pacífica del centro y sur de Costa Rica.
