Abstract
The present chapter reviews the botany, phytochemistry, and biological properties of Aloe macra (Xanthorrhoeaceae), a critically endangered medicinal plant endemic to Reunion Island (France). Similarly to all Mascarene Aloes, A. macra is rich in anthraquinones and flavonoids namely apigenin and isoorientin. Interestingly, isoorientin has been detected in A. macra only, which may endorse its superior biological attributes such as antibacterial, antioxidant, and antityrosinase activity. Aloe macra leaf extracts is also reported to have antiviral potential. This species has been successfully regenerated in vitro by tissue culture techniques.
