Local perceptions of the benefits versus negative impacts of weedy grasses in central Madagascar, with a focus on the genus Digitaria.

The biocultural heritage and changing role of indigenous yams in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa.

Landrace diversity and heritage of the indigenous millet crop fonio (Digitaria exilis): Socio‐cultural and climatic drivers of change in the Fouta Djallon region of Guinea.

Orphan crops of archaeology‐based crop history research.

Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems and Biocultural Heritage: Addressing Indigenous Priorities Using Decolonial and Interdisciplinary Research Approaches.
The food systems and territories of Indigenous Peoples sustain much of the world’s biodiversity, cultivated and wild, through agroecological practices rooted in Indigenous cosmovision and cultural and spiritual values. These food systems have a critical role to play in sustainability transformations but are widely threatened and have received limited research...Swiderska, Krystyna ; Argumedo, Alejandro ; Wekesa, Chemuku ; Ndalilo, Leila ; Song, Yiching …

Genome Sequencing of up to 6,000-Year-Old Citrullus Seeds Reveals Use of a Bitter-Fleshed Species Prior to Watermelon Domestication.
Iconographic evidence from Egypt suggests that watermelon pulp was consumed there as a dessert by 4,360 BP. Earlier archaeobotanical evidence comes from seeds from Neolithic settlements in Libya, but whether these were watermelons with sweet pulp or other forms is unknown. We generated genome sequences from 6,000- and 3,300-year-old seeds... -

Indigenous food systems, biocultural heritage and the SDGs: challenges, interdisciplinary research gaps and empowering methodologies.
Indigenous Peoples’ food systems have a critical role to play in addressing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but face many challenges and have so far received little attention from researchers and policymakers. This virtual workshop, consisting of four webinars held in October 2020, brought together several Indigenous representatives, academics,...Swiderska, Krystyna ; Ryan, Philippa

Unlocking plant resources to support food security and promote sustainable agriculture.
Societal Impact Statement Biodiversity is essential to food security and nutrition locally and globally. By reviewing the global state of edible plants and highlighting key neglected and underutilized species (NUS), we attempt to unlock plant food resources and explore the role of fungi, which along with the wealth of traditional...
