Haageocereus: Taxonomy for the Conservation of the Genus in Peru.
The genus Haageocereus (Cactaceae) is mostly endemic o f Peru, occupying arid areas draining westwards o f Andes. In Peru, Haageocereus is found between 50 to 2800 m, from 79°54’W, 5°7’S (dept. Piura) to 70°52’W, 18°0’S (dept. Tacna). The understanding of this genus has been limited by several nomenclature problems...Moya-Mendez, Natalia Calderon

Conservation genetics and biogeography of the Caribbean pine (Pinus caribaea var. bahamensis) in the Bahaman archipelago.
The Bahaman archipelago contains large expanses of pine forests, where the endemic Caribbean pine Pinus caribaea var. bahamensis is the dominant species. This pine forest ecosystem is rich in species and also a valuable resource for the local economy. Small areas of old-growth forest still remain in the Turks and...Sanchez, Michele

Phylogenetics, genome size evolution and population genetics of slipper orchids in the subfamily Cypripedioideae (Orchidaceae).
Slipper orchids (subfamily Cypripedioideae) comprise five genera; Paphiopedilum, Cypripedium, Phragmipedium, Selenipedium, and Mexipedium. Phylogenetic relationships of the genus Paphiopedilum, were studied using nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid sequence data. The results confirm that Paphiopedilum is monophyletic and support the division of the genus into three subgenera Parvisepalum, Brachypetalum and Paphiopedilum....Chochai, Araya

Molecular and Genome Evolution in the Malesian Slipper Orchids (Paphiopedilum section Barbata).
Paphiopedilum section Barbata (Cypripedioideae: Orchidaceae) is an evolutionarily young and charismatic group of terrestrial orchids native to the Himalayas, Indochina and Malesia. It contains several interesting species complexes, variable chromosome numbers (2n=28-42) and genome sizes (2C=55-70 pg) with hybrid speciation suspected on the basis of morphological data. In Chapter 1,...Yap, Jing Wei

Boraginaceae Varronia rupicola (Urb.) Brtton : biogeography, systematic placement and conservation genetics of a threatened species endemic to the Caribbean.
In the Caribbean region, Varronia rupicola (Boraginaceae) is a medium to large, woody shrub endemic to the Puerto Rican Bank where it is threatened with extinction due to its limited area of occupancy, small populations and on-going threats. The greatest of these is currently loss of suitable habitat through development...Hamilton, Martin Allen

Fungal interactions with vascular and non-vascular plants: an investigation of mutualisms and their roles in heathland regeneration.
Mycorrhizal mutualisms between aboveground vascular plant communities, which reward their belowground fungal associates with photosynthates in return for growth-limiting nutrients such as phosphate, are widely recognized as stable long-term interactions which helped plants colonize land. Pezoloma ericae (D.J. Read) Baral, an ascomycete mycorrhiza-forming fungus present amongst plants in the Ericales,...Kowal, Jill

Heterogeneous cloth: an ethnography of the coming into being of barkcloth artefacts at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and amongst the Nuaulu of Nua Nea Village, Maluku, Eastern Indonesia.
5. Abstract This thesis uses barkcloth artefacts as a methodological point of entry and fieldsite, to explore their material properties. It argues that the material properties of barkcloth artefacts are indexical of social relations, as it moves between contexts; exploring the nature of properties as inherently diverse or diversely exploited,... -

Phytogeography and the stoichiometric niche: exploring their interplay in Sulawesi
The Indonesian island of Sulawesi is comprised of a mosaic of soil types including the largest ultramafic outcrops in the tropics (ultramafic soils are macronutrient low and phytotoxic heavy metal rich). The island’s ontogeny is also distinctive, whereby it has formed only recently < 2 million years ago via agglomeration...Trethowan, Liam A.

Plant conservation in space, time and a changing world: forecasting the fate of Coffea arabica in Ethiopia.
We are facing an ever-increasing environmental crisis on our planet, with multiple threats from humankind. We need to plan for the future in order to adapt or mitigate these...Moat, Justin

Phylogenetic relationships of Fabales, the effect of outgroups on Fabales topology and the evolution of keel flowers within the order.
Fabales is a cosmopolitan angiosperm order which consists of four families, Leguminosae (Fabaceae), Polygalaceae, Surianaceae and Quillajaceae. Despite the great interest of botanists, a convincing phylogeny of the order is still not available because almost every phylogenetic study reveals a different scheme of relationships amongst families of the order. Therefore,...Aygoren Uluer, Deniz

Unravelling the secrets of fern spore germination: what are their thermal thresholds and how will they cope with climate change
Ferns are an important and diverse group of plants. Recruitment from spore to gametophyte represents the first crucial stage in a fern’s development and is responsible for the regeneration of natural populations. However, research into the thermal thresholds for spore germination is deficient and quantitative predictions about how germination may...Steed-Mundin, Olivia

The determinants of geographic variation in within-population genetic diversity: a global meta-analysis
Research has demonstrated that differing levels of genetic diversity within a species can affect how populations respond to disturbance, interact with other species and expand into new ecological niches. The geographic variation in within-population genetic diversity is therefore an important factor in explaining species co-existence, speciation, extinction and ultimately, species...Franz, Madeline

The relationship between antibiotic compounds in wild plant extracts and environmental growing conditions – factors affecting the antimicrobial activity of Allium Ursinum L.
In order to investigate how environmental factors affect plant antibiotic compounds, a literature review of plants with known antibiotic plant activity was carried out, and wild garlic (Allium ursinum L.) chosen as the model organism for the study. 168 individuals were collected from 7 sites across London and its suburban...Burton, George
