The genome sequence of the Fruity Milkcap, Lactarius evosmus (Kühner & Romagn., 1954).
We present a genome assembly from an individual (Fruity Milkcap; Basidiomycota; Agaricomycetes; Russulales; Russulaceae). The genome sequence is 57.2 megabases in span. Most of the assembly is scaffolded into 11 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled and is 61.51 kilobases in length.Cullington, Penny ; Douglas, Brian ; Woof, Kieran ; Gaya, Ester ; Kew Genome Acquisition Lab, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, United Kingdom …

Telipogon nigropurpureus (Orchidaceae: Oncidiinae): new insights on its morphology and distribution in Colombia and Ecuador.
Over the past 20 years, Telipogon nigropurpureus had been known from only one specimen from the type locality near Arcabuco, Boyacá, in central Colombia. During botanical explorations in Colombia and Ecuador we have encountered more populations which are reported here. The new records found in Ecuador extend the known geographic... -

Phylogenetic evidence reshapes the taxonomy of Cacao and its allies (Theobroma and Herrania; Malvaceae, Byttnerioideae).
(Malvaceae, Byttnerioideae), the cacao genus, has a taxonomic history spanning over two centuries. Currently, it comprises 23 species of trees from lowland forests from the Tropical Americas. , a closely related genus described later, includes 17 additional species commonly referred to as “wild cacaos.” Phylogenetic relationships and morphological circumscriptions between... -

Prioritising Important Plant Areas (IPAs) among the limestone karsts of Perak, Malaysia.
The flora of limestone karsts is exceptionally rich, due in particular to the wide array of microhabitats that limestone outcrops support. However, in Peninsular Malaysia limestone outcrops are heavily exploited for the quarry industry, cave temples, leisure venues and the development of geoparks, hence the limestone flora is amongst the... -

Interpreting materia medica. A case study on Ioannes Archiatrus.
Background Premodern medical texts are an invaluable source for scholars from humanities and sciences. However, they are usually not accessible as few scientists with an interest in premodern materia medica are also qualified philologists. Therefore, a balance has to be struck to translate these texts while preserving information on how... -

A new classification system and taxonomic synopsis for Malpighiaceae (Malpighiales, Rosids) based on molecular phylogenetics, morphology, palynology, and chemistry.
Malpighiaceae has undergone unprecedented changes in its traditional classification in the past two decades due to several phylogenetic studies shedding light on the non-monophyly of all subfamilies and most tribes and genera. Even though morphological characters were used to reconstruct the last molecular generic phylogeny of Malpighiaceae, a new classification... -

Stomatal evolution and plant adaptation to future climate.
Global climate change is affecting plant photosynthesis and transpiration processes, as well as increasing weather extremes impacting socio‐political and environmental events and decisions for decades to come. One major research challenge in plant biology and ecology is the interaction of photosynthesis with the environment. Stomata control plant gas exchange and... -

Marsh-orchids of Canada: long-standing mysteries partially solved.
Between 1959 and 1988, three populations of purple-flowered terrestrial orchids attributable to subgenus were discovered in Canada. The populations at Timmins, Ontario, and St John's, Newfoundland were strongly marked on both flowers and leaves, in contrast with the anthocyanin-deficient population at Tilt Cove, Newfoundland. All three populations have since experienced... -

Molecular phylogenetics of Distephanus supports the recognition of a new tribe, Distephaneae (Asteraceae).
Distephanus Cass. comprises 43 distinctive species of shrubs and small trees that have been placed historically within the ironweed tribe, Vernonieae (Asteraceae). Using the most expansive sampling of Distephanus to date, this study aims to test the monophyly of this genus and facilitate its classification. Molecular phylogenetic analyses were conducted...Gostel, M. R. ; Loeuille, Benoit ; Santana, Mariana Henriques ; Kelloff, Carol L ; Chan, Raymund …

Phylogenomics and the rise of the angiosperms
Angiosperms are the cornerstone of most terrestrial ecosystems and human livelihoods1,2. A robust understanding of angiosperm evolution is required to explain their rise to ecological dominance. So far, the angiosperm tree of life has been determined primarily by means of analyses of the plastid genome3,4. Many studies have drawn on...Zuntini, Alexandre R. ; Carruthers, Tom ; Maurin, Olivier ; Bailey, Paul C. ; Leempoel, Kevin …

Estimation of contemporary effective population size in plant populations: Limitations of genomic datasets.
Effective population size ( ) is a pivotal evolutionary parameter with crucial implications in conservation practice and policy. Genetic methods to estimate have been preferred over demographic methods because they rely on genetic data rather than time‐consuming ecological monitoring. Methods based on linkage disequilibrium (LD), in particular, have become popular... -

Nitrogen-fixing and non-nitrogen-fixing legume plants differ in leaf nutrient concentrations and relationships between photosynthetic and hydraulic traits.
Legumes account for a significant proportion of plants in the terrestrial ecosystems. Nitrogen-fixing capability of certain legumes is a pivotal trait that contributes to their ecological dominance. Yet, the functional traits and trait relationships between N-fixer and non-N-fixer legumes are poorly understood. Here, we investigated 27 functional traits associated with... -
